Engineering Update by James Bottomley
40135 has been lifted off its bogies at the ELR Loco Works to finally undertake lasting repairs to the segmental bearings (body-to-bogie interface) which have plagued the loco for some time. The bearings were repaired sufficiently at Barrow Hill back in 2011 to allow the loco to return to traffic at the time, however a full repair is required to see the loco ‘good’ for the future.
The time-span of the work is currently unknown while measurements and closer inspections are undertaken and the required re-metalling and machining started. The loco is booked to fulfil a 12-month hire commitment to the SVR from this Autumn; currently being handled by 40106.
