Latest news: 10th June 2013 - More progress at Barrow Hill

40145 (345) restarted - 15th May 2013.

Below are two videos showing 40145 being started for the first time in nearly 3 years. The first (shorter video shows 40145 running on Wednesday May 15th where a few problems were found due to the inactivity of the engine. The second (longer) video shows the engine running following a few tweaks made to the engine. There is still much to be done but the CFPS are well on the way to have 40145 running again!

The repaired armature returned from Bowers Electricals to HNRC on 23/04/13 and the following day the generator
was reconnected to the power unit.

The whole unit was then lifted back into 40145 on May 1st and days of toil took place fitting components and making connections.

On 15/05/13, 3 years to the date since it hauled “The East Lancs Champion” Charter to Penzance, 40145 was STARTED UP and it was a tremendous feeling to see and hear it..

Subject to what funds we receive, we are aiming to have 40145 operational by Early July.

There is a lot of work on the loco still to be done and a lot of arrangements to be made. Load Bank test being one thing, equipment tests, fitting of GSMR equipment, air tanks recertified and ALSO an audit of the loco prior to it being registered FIT for Main Line Running.

The amount of work done and the progress made on the reassembly of 40145 in the last 3 weeks by The HNRC team has been superb.
However, it ALL has to be paid for !

We have reasonable funds in the bank but insufficient to pay for all the work that is still required.

We need everyone to help swell The CFPS bank account to ensure that we don’t end up with a glistening and fully fit locomotive that is just going to sit at Barrow Hill for months until we can afford to pay for its release !

Please folks, either send a donation, join or REJOIN The CFPS, renew your membership early or PLEASE purchase something from the sales pages of The CFPS website in order to help us.

The amount each person contributes doesn’t have to be large providing that there is a “large” volume of people contributing and supporting us.

Remember, that because we are a registered charity, you are able to make small donations up to £10 by way of YOUR MOBILE PHONE.

Just SEND a TEXT to 70070 and then text the message…. CFPS40 stating the amount you are donating. i.e. CFPS40 £10.

I hope we can count on your support as we strive to get the beauty back out on The Mainline again hauling a Railtour.

We owe that to the lads at Barrow Hill for their dedication as well of course to The CFPS Membership.

Thank you.

Regards

John.

Welcome to the Class 40 Preservation Society Website.

  Registered charity number 326323

The Class 40 Preservation Society was formed in 1980 and are the proud owners of two English Electric Type 4, Class 40 locomotives, D335 (40135) & 40145 (D345). Both locomotives are based at Bury on the East Lancs Railway in Northern England. D335 is currently painted in its original 1961 British Railways green Livery, whilst 40145 is running in BR large logo livery. We also own the cab of 40088.

Our two locos were part of a 200 strong class of mixed traffic locos introduced between 1958 & 1962. Each loco was fitted with a single 2,000 horsepower engine, which made them a Type 4 under the British Railways diesel classification. In the early 1970’s the locos became part of Class 40 under British Rail’s computerised TOPS classification system.

Both our locos were bought from BR upon withdrawal, D345/40145 in February 1984, D335/40135 in May 1988. They perform regularly at the East Lancs Railway. A major milestone for the society occurred in October 2002, when D345/40145 was certified to run on the national rail network. Since then the loco has worked numerous railtours to places the length and breadth of Britain.

On the pages of this website you can find out about the history of the class, learn about 40145’s main line exploits, find the latest class 40 news, download booking forms for 40145’s railtours, take a browse through our sales items and lots more.

Also why not use our on-line shop to buy some everyday items. Purchases bought through this link generate money for the CFPS click the icon below:
